This arti\u00adcle assem\u00adbles a novel data\u00adset cove\u00adring 42 coun\u00adtri\u00ades from 1985 to 2020 to explo\u00adre the impact of public spen\u00adding on soci\u00adal pro\u00adtec\u00adti\u00adon on gross domes\u00adtic pro\u00adduct (GDP). Our con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon to the empi\u00adri\u00adcal lite\u00adra\u00adtu\u00adre on soci\u00adal pro\u00adtec\u00adti\u00adon spen\u00adding lies in con\u00adduc\u00adting the lar\u00adgest mul\u00adti-coun\u00adtry study using the struc\u00adtu\u00adral VAR appro\u00ada\u00adch. Our results high\u00adlight posi\u00adti\u00adve effects of soci\u00adal pro\u00adtec\u00adti\u00adon expen\u00addi\u00adtu\u00adres on GDP that sur\u00adpass tho\u00adse of total govern\u00adment expen\u00addi\u00adtu\u00adres. The\u00adse results vary con\u00adsi\u00adde\u00adra\u00adbly across coun\u00adtri\u00ades, with impact mul\u00adti\u00adpli\u00aders ran\u00adging from 5 in Mexi\u00adco to \u20110.71 in Para\u00adguay. We detect that the cumu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adve mul\u00adti\u00adpli\u00ader exce\u00adeds 1 for 30 out of the 42 sam\u00adple coun\u00adtri\u00ades and tends to be higher ove\u00adrall, sug\u00adges\u00adting that the posi\u00adti\u00adve impact of soci\u00adal pro\u00adtec\u00adti\u00adon spen\u00adding on GDP accu\u00admu\u00adla\u00adtes over time. We also find sta\u00adtis\u00adti\u00adcally sig\u00adni\u00adfi\u00adcant and strong cor\u00adre\u00adla\u00adti\u00adons betwe\u00aden the cumu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adve and impact mul\u00adti\u00adpli\u00aders and ine\u00adqua\u00adlity mea\u00adsu\u00adres such as the Gini coef\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adent and the inco\u00adme sha\u00adres of the poo\u00adrest and the richest: the posi\u00adti\u00adve impact of public spen\u00adding on soci\u00adal pro\u00adtec\u00adti\u00adon on GDP is espe\u00adci\u00adally pro\u00adnoun\u00adced in coun\u00adtri\u00ades cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adri\u00adzed by higher ine\u00adqua\u00adlity. Taken together, our results hold sig\u00adni\u00adfi\u00adcant policy impli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons, sug\u00adges\u00adting that the growth-enhan\u00adcing poten\u00adti\u00adal of soci\u00adal pro\u00adtec\u00adti\u00adon poli\u00adci\u00ades is com\u00adple\u00admen\u00adtary to their abi\u00adlity to redu\u00adce inequality.<\/p>\n
